Art Statement
“The Cross Road”
“The Cross Road” symbolizes the miracle and the life of Jesus Christ.
The Cross is the sign showing the mystery of Jesus Christ.
I want to express the mystery of God through the cross in my painting.
Until 2000 from 1984 my works represented the thoughts of my inner world, and they were my diary and that of my society. They also portrayed life and death, the concern about being human, and the reflection of inner agony, which resulted in an illusion or a fantastic Utopia. These dreams connect the relationship between God and the human being. Ultimately I guess it has something to do with God in order to overcome the restraints of life, living and death and all phenomena of pain.
The series of “The Door of the Heaven” of 1993 depicted men’s dream and the desire to be connected to the world of God. By 2012 my works reflected the relationship of God to man which was previously an illusion and a vision emerged concretely and realistically.
Firstly, I chose the image of the cross to depict the vision of God.
I tried to show the mystery of Jesus Christ and the beauty of the form through the cross by that concrete symbol. When the work was full of the crosses, I felt the beauty of the light such as the feeling when God created light in the beginning.
Moreover, when I drew the figure and another formation, I painted the background with the crosses to try to express that God and I became one as if God’s spirit lived in us.(Corinthians3:16).
Secondly, I used a variety of material such as Korean paper, canvas, and acrylic. Korean paper is different from western paper. It is very strong and its absorbing power is excellent. When paper absorbs color, the color spreads; I enjoy this interesting process which Muk(Korean Ink) or color is absorbed into the paper. In addition, I used few colors on several paintings instead of using many colors. The reason is that the original nature of Korean paper disappears when I color strongly. Koreans say “Paper is breathing”. They think if paper is covered with thick color, it’s difficult to breathe because paper is alive. I also feel uncomfortable seeing that kind of colored paper. Another reason I used few colors was that I wanted to emphasize the esoteric spiritual world
In the end, “The Cross Road” symbolizes the mystery of Jesus Christ and it is also the journey of my life to know Jesus Christ. My relationship to God is linked to my inclination and to personal experience. I want to focus on the connection between my inner self and my painting. I want to share that connection with people who are interested in the mystery of God as they think of “The Cross Road”. If my last works showed my inner self like my diary, my present works are my prayers confessing to God.
