초대의 글
르네상스이후 미술이 인문학과의 연계로 더욱더 재해석을 거듭하면서 인류문화사에 지대한 영향을 끼치며 오늘날 현대미술에 자리하게되었으며 예술의 미래비젼을 활짝열어놓게 되었다. 이것은 종래의 미술교육이 도제교육으로부터 대학이라는 거대교육기관으로 옮겨지면서 큰변화를 가져오게 됬음을 한 원인이라고 할수 있다. 우리지역에 있는 몽클레어 미술대학은 예술의 산실로서 지역사회는 물론 미술세계에 이미 널리 알려진 대학으로서 문화예술에 많은 공헌이 이루어지고 있는곳이다.
이번 Riverside Gallery에서는 몽클레어 미술대학의 유수한 교수님들의 진지하고 순수한 작품들로서 조각, 금속공예, 판화들을 전시하게 됨을 대단히 뜻깊게 생각하며 Catherine Bebout, Robert Browning, Lynne Buschman, Eileen Foti, Hyun Jung Kim, Frederick Marshall, Kristal Romano, Walter Swales 교수님들께 진심으로 감사드리며, 이번 전시회를 기획해 주신 이대학의 교수이며 작가이시고 한국 서울대학과 동대학원에서 수학하신 김현정 선생님께 깊은 사의를 표한다.

Invitation Letter
Art has been connected with the humanities and has continued to be reinterpreted since the Renaissance. This has provided a profound impact on the cultural history of mankind, has helped to establish contemporary art, and has created a vision for the future of art. The change may be caused by the transfer of art education from apprenticeship training to larger educational institutions such as the university. In our area, Montclair State University’s School of Art & Design, already well known in the art world, is a birthplace of the art community and contributes to the arts and culture.
The Riverside Gallery is very pleased to have an opportunity to show the Montclair State University School of Art & Design professors’ sincere and pure sculptures, metal works and prints. We sincerely appreciate each attending Professor: Catherine Bebout, Robert Browning, Lynne Buschman, Eileen Foti, Hyun Jung Kim, Frederick Marshall, Kristal Romano, and Walter Swales, and wish to express our deep appreciation to Prof. Kim for curating and organizing this exhibition. – Riverside Gallery, Kyung Youl Yoon

기획의 글

부가가치란 무엇인가? 기본적인 자제를 연마하여 도구를 만들어 유용성을 부여한 것으로부터 시작하여 우리는 지금도 생활속에서 끊임없이 부가가치를 창조하며 살고 있다. 연금술은 이러한 부가가치의 극대화를 꿈꾸는 것으로 미천한 재료로 최고의 가치라 여겨지는 금을 만들거나 불노장생의 약들을 만들어 보려는 인간의 부단한 꿈과 노력이라 할수 있다. 무모한 시도로 여겨지는 연금술사의 이것은 예술이 원하는 것과 같은 맥락에 있다.

물질을 이용하여 아름다움과 의미소통의 최대가치를 만들어내는 예술은 최고의 부가가치부여의 연금술이다. 이러한 시도의 극단적인 예는 미술사의 아르테포베라Arte Povera에서 찾아볼수 있다. 피에르 만죠니 Piero Manzoni는 인간의 배변을 통조림 아트< Artist’s shit -“Merda d’artista”(1961)> 로 만드는 행위를 통해 극단적인 가치부여의 예를 보여주었다. 간과되오던 일상의 것들의 고급미술로에의 변환의 시도는 우리를 자극하였고, 오브제와 물질, 과정, 행위와 개념에 이르기까지 이들을 재료임과 동시에 예술 그 자체로 승급시켜놓음으로 우리가 인식하지 못한것에 대한 가치를 부여하는 연금술적인 행위들이 한동안의 미술사를 장식하였다.

이제 우리는 이런 미술사적 배경아래 방법으로서의 재료의 자유를 획득하였고 각각은 개개인의 표현을 위해 미술사에서 자유롭게 놓아준 이러한 밥법들을 마음대로 선택하고 요리할수 있게 되었다. 이번전시는 이러한 연금술의 재료로 금속Metal을 선택한 작가들을 함께 모아보았다. 금속은 이들의 작업에서 과정의 형태로 쓰이기도 하였고 결과물의 형태로 나타나기도 한다. 프린트작가인 Catherine Bebout과 Eileen Foti는 동판과 알루미늄판을 그 과정으로 사용한다. 조각가인 Walter Swales 와 Lynne Buschmann은 금속을 캐스팅하여 작업하며, 현대쥬얼리아트의 선구자인 Robert Browning과 Frederick Marshall은 전통적인 쥬얼리의 방법과 재료를 고수함과 동시에 이를 현대적인 미의 개념으로 소화하고 있다. 차세대작가인 Hyun Jung Kim 과 Kristal Romano는 쥬얼리와 조각의 방법적인 면들을 취해 그들의 개념을 표현하고 있다.

이들의 작업은 각기다른 이야기와 형식을 취하고 있지만 금속이라는 재료의 선택을 가지고 예술이라는 더나은 가치를 창조하려는 공통의 노력이 있다. 이전시가 관객들에게는 작업들이 주는 질문들과 아름다움을 통해 각자의 삶에 더 나은 가치를 부여할수있는 기회가 되는 연금술로 사용되어지기를 희망해본다.

Curatorial Statement
What is added value? Starting with giving availability by polishing basic materials to make tools, we are constantly creating added value in our lives. Alchemy is the dream to maximize these added values. These are endless efforts and dreams of human beings to use humble materials to create highly valued products such as gold or “fountain of youth” drugs. While alchemists’ efforts may be considered as useless, I believe that all art forms can be viewed in the same context.
Art, which produces the maximum added value of beauty and meaningful communication from basic materials, is alchemy. The extreme example of this attempt in art history can be found in Arte Povera. Piero Manzoni produced canned art of the human excrement <Artist’s shit – “Merda d’artista” (1961)> in order to make authentic and universal value as an example. The attempt to convert an overlooked everyday object to high art stimulated us. This alchemic action, which is the promotion of the objects, materials, processes, actions and concepts were not only materials themselves but also art itself, decorated art history for a while.
Now, we obtain the freedom of material as our methods from history and can freely choose and “cook” the methods which are released to express individual needs in art history. In this exhibition, I brought together artists who use metal as alchemy. In the form of their work, metal can be the process or result of them. Printers Catherine Bebout and Eileen Foti use copper and aluminum sheets in the process. Sculptors Walter Swales and Lynne Buschmann cast metals for their works. Innovative contemporary jewelers Robert Browning and Frederick Marshall use traditional methods and materials of jewelry, but transform them as the modern concept of beauty. Next-generation artists Hyun Jung Kim and Kristal Romano take methods from sculpture and jewelry to express their concepts.
Their works take different forms of stories, but they have a common effort to choose metal as a medium to create a better value. The questions and the beauty of work in this exhibition are designed to provide an opportunity to viewers to add more value to their lives – Alchemy.
